Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High court Abuja has asked the Department of State Service to release Omoyele Sowore on bail. The judge made the ruling after listening to the argument of Sowore's lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) and the prosecuting counsel. The judge, as part of bail conditions, asked Sowore to drop his passport with the court within 48 hours. At the hearing today, Sowore's lawyer, Femi Falana insisted that order of 45 days granted to DSS should be vacated since there is no renewal and therefore ask for the release of the respondent in line with section 35 of the constitution. Falana went on to remind the court that there is no bail application before the court. Filling of an information cannot metamorphose into a remand order. He urged the court to discountenance the prayer by the prosecution for misleading the court that the respondent is facing a capital offence. A fire outbreak in the maternity unit of an Algerian hospital near the border with Tunisia on Tuesday September 23, claimed the lives of 8 newborns.  The state broadcaster  ENTV  television and national radio reported that the fire broke out at approximately 4am at the hospital in the town of El Oued, 360 miles southwest of the capital, Algiers.  While 11 newborns, 37 mothers and 28 employees were evacuated from the building, the emergency service said 3 babies died of burns and five of asphyxiation.  “Unfortunately we regret the deaths of eight babies, some from burns and others from smoke inhalation" Captain Nassim Bernaoui, an emergency services spokesperson said.  The country's health Minister Mohamed Miraoui, told Ennahar television that an investigation will determine whether the anti-mosquito device was responsible. This is reportedly the second fire to rip through the maternity hospital in El Oued in 18 months. 

An accident involving multiple vehicles around the Bypass area of Gombe state has left six people dead. According to eye witnesses, an open truck said to belong to Dangote experienced brake failure, the truck was said to be conveying ceiling sheets. The truck was said to have rammed into other vehicles and in the process knocked them into a nearby canal.   An eyewitness, Julaibib Musa, who narrated how the incident played out said  “the accident happened a few minutes ago. It was the Dangote truck that started brushing an 18-seater bus, with LAG Agege 814 plate number, with three passengers and tricycles into the canal.”     A survivor, who identified himself as Mubarak, a tricycle operator said, 'a fter dropping passengers, I tried to take a U-turn when I saw the truck approaching. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) just announced that the full implementation of the cashless policy will become effective from March 31, 2020. In the circular titled: “Re: Implementation of the Cashless Policy,” that was addressed to all banks, it announced the commencement of charges on deposits in addition to already existing charges on withdrawals.   According to the circular, the charges, which take effect from today, would attract three per cent processing fees for withdrawals and two per cent processing fees for lodgements of amounts above N500,000 for individual accounts.   Reacting to the proposed development, Don Jazzy wrote, ' my dear the whole thing just reeks of a desperate move to generate revenue. When they load their own stolen money in the bank, they don’t care whatever charges they have to pay'.

It has been claimed that a Nigerian man who died in his cell at a UK detention centre had told authorities at the centre that he was feeling unwell but he was not provided with medical attention. Oscar Okwurime, 34, was discovered lying in his cell at the Harmondsworth removal centre by another detainee last week. The cause of his death is unknown but the Home Office said it was being investigated. His older brother told The Independent that the deceased said he was feeling unwell during his first week in the removal centre.  His older brother, 44, who asked to be identified as Alex told The Independent: "I told him straight away: tell the authorities there and they will get you checked." Operatives of the Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested three men in Uyo the Akwa Ibom State Capital, for allegedly impersonating operatives of both the Economic and financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC. The arrested suspects are Norbert Rampa, 51; Patrick Essien, 50; and Gabriel Daniel, 32. Rampa, Essien and Daniel, along with other members of their team had paid a courtesy visit to the Commissions office in Uyo, on September 19, 2018, under the Grassroot Development Advocacy Initiative (GDAI) which they claim was a registered organisation, under the auspices of National Anti-corruption Coalition (NACC). At least two persons have been reported dead after a commercial vehicle plunged into a river in Osun State.   According to Folashade Odoro, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, the accident happened at an area known as Oke-Gada in Ede on Monday, September 16th.  One of the residents of the area said the accident happened around 7pm. He said the driver was trying to avoid potholes near the bridge on the river. The occupants of the vehicle were said to have been rushed to a private hospital in the area.

A team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer Igando, CSP Taiwo Kasumu, arrested three notorious armed robbery suspects on September 14th. A statement released by the spokesperson of the police command, Bala Elkana, says the armed robbery gang terrorizes the Igando/Egan residential neighborhood mostly at night time. They arrived the neighborhood on three motorcycles with intent to rob along Ikotun-Igando road but the attempt was foiled by the police. Bala says one of the suspects, Oseni Waheed, 32, was arrested at the scene with one locally made pistol while the rest escaped. He led detectives to Aribisala street in Egan where three of his fleeing accomplices were arrested.  Bala says the suspects were also on the wanted list of the State CID Yaba for series of robberies and murders including the murder of a Policeman under Amukoko Division during one of their robbery operations. Youths under the aegis of "Save Sapele Group" embarked on a peaceful protest in Delta State on Tuesday, September 17th to condemn cybercrime and Internet fraud in the country.   Speaking during the peaceful protest, one of the leaders said,  “the protest was to condemn the activities of some misguided elements that engage in despicable activities such as Internet fraud, cybercrimes and kidnapping in Sapele".   He added, " we don't want ‘Yahoo yahoo’, we don't want Internet fraud, we say no to 419 and ritual killings and stated that Sapele is known for commendable activities and not illegal acts as being portrayed".

Three self-acclaimed Islamic clerics (pictured above) who specialize in swindling unsuspecting members of the public of their hard earned money as well as having unlawful carnal knowledge of their female clients have been arrested by men of the Ogun state police command. A statement from the command's spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, says the suspects, Aliu Abdulfatai, 50; Sule Adebayo, 36 and Lekan Olokodana, 31, were arrested following a report by one of their female victims (name withheld) who reported at Adigbe Police Station that she was duped of the sum of N70,000 by the suspects, while one of them raped her. Liz Anjorin has countersued Toyin Abraham after she was sued for libel. Toyin Abraham sued Liz Anjorin first for libel after Liz accused her of being the one who provides Instagram blogs with damaging information about her fellow actresses (read  here ). Toyin reacted by saying she will not come down to Liz's level. Toyin replied with legal documents demanding that Liz "cease and desist in publishing defamatory statements" about her. In reply to being sued, Liz granted an interview where she stood her ground and continued to attack Toyin Abraham. She eventually went the legal route too and sued Toyin Abraham. Luck ran out on a gang of robbers in Lagos today as they entered a mobile phone store pretending to be customers but ended up robbing the store. According to an eye witness, ' three of them entered Xright store at iyana ipaja, two of them stepped out while one remained inside and was acting as if he wants to buy a phone but ended up stealing it'. 'When it was discovered that a phone had gone missing, the suspect had disappeared but luckily the two guys looking out for him outside were caught, beayen up and they confessed to the crime'. Dammy Krane whose real name is Johnson Oyindamola, was arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos by the police today September 16th on a three-count charge of threat to life, defamation and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace. Dammy was accused to have threatened to attack staff of betting company, MerryBet, verbally and online after a business deal between them went sour. Police Prosecutor, Insp. J. I. Enang, told the court that the 27-year-old singer attended a betting competition organised by the betting company and went on rampage after he lost during the competition on July 29th at Cool FM in Lagos. The police prosecutor added that Dammy Krane went on to post a video on the internet accusing the sport betting company of owing him. “The defendant, however demanded some money for appearing on the show, the firm disagreed, insisting that the sum was only for the winners.  The musician subsequently breached a contractual agreement with the firm.
